The Shower Incident

This is my first day back in Singapore, and this time I’m probably staying for a long while. 5 months ago, all I did was wish this day would come. But now that I’m here, I don’t really know what I want. It’s weird.
When I came back to Indonesia 5 months ago, all I did was complain. Everything was wrong and I just wanted to go back to Singapore. I hated having to actually work in an office, hated having to drive through traffic every day, hated not being able to go out when and where I want to, and basically everything else. But when I left for Singapore today, I can’t help but feel like I already miss home.
At home in Indonesia,
- I didn’t have to think about what to eat every day.
- I can actually watch what I eat.
- The basketball court is within walking distance and I could and did play almost every day.
- The piano sounds infinitely better than the electric piano I have in Singapore.
- Most importantly, I had my family around all the time.
And as for the work that I hated so much, I can’t help but feel grateful to have gone through it. I learned a whole lot from there, it’s good working experience, and I actually get paid. I mean, when I first started working, I thought 5 months is impossible to get through, but the fact is time passes with a snap of a finger, a blink of an eye. And before you know it, what you thought you hated has become what you know you needed.
I guess if there’s a lesson to be learned here, it’s to enjoy the present and be grateful for the time you are given. The grass is always going to be greener on the other side, that’s just human nature. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the grass you’re standing on right now.
