My math tutor [Part 2]
He lives with one of his relatives and tutors their kids too. And the neighbors’ kids. He told me once that his nephews and nieces always ask him for stuff because they know that he can’t refuse. He also has a lot of these almost lame, but funny jokes. One example is: “what’s in the middle of the water?” “T.”
Over the course of our lessons, I got to know him a little bit. And there were 2 stories he told me that broke my heart.
He studied electrical engineering in college and sometime in the 90s I guess, he started to save up money in hopes to open a decent store selling lighting equipments and such. But some time in 2001, he came home to find his house on fire. The second floor of his house was burnt down, so he used his savings to rebuild the house. He didn’t say about his plans for the lighting store after that though.
Once, his brother was driving and overtook a police car in front of a traffic light. His brother had the car window open. The police gets out of the car and goes to his brother. The police then used the butt of his gun to hit his brother on the head, denting his skull and paralyzing him permanently. All because his brother overtook a police car. They eventually found the police, but my teacher’s family decided not to take any legal action because of fear of what the police might do. That’s Indonesia for you.
Why do bad things happen to the best of people? While garbage, scum, and douchebags like that police roam free hitting people on the head with the butt of their guns? I guess this is one of the reasons why I don’t know if I can believe in heaven or hell. Either ways, I sincerely hope that my math tutor is doing well and my brother isn’t giving him too much trouble during lessons. I hope no matter the circumstances, he can find happiness in everything he does. Even the little things in life.
